Medical Sovereignty as Related to Knee Pain – Part 2 is part of the self-discovery/self-empowerment series I took out of knee pain. It’s a process of taking back personal power after ACL reconstruction. This concept of “Medical Sovereignty” is a much larger conversation than originally conceived and now being broken down into several articles.
This is Part 2 in the series.

3 Things I Count on When I’m Challenged
There are 3 things I can count on whenever I experience challenges in my life:
- Resistance when telling me I can’t do something
- To figure things out for me
- Always believe there has to be a better way
After a severe car accident in the Summer of 1993 where I shattered a windshield with my face. I was left with my car totaled, and a full-blown concussion. After moving back home with my parents and talking with insurance companies to figure out how I was going to be “compensated” for my injuries.
I found myself torn in an internal struggle with 4 challenges to get better:
- The “insurance/money” game for reimbursement of my totaled car.
- Going to doctors that didn’t understand what happened/going on in my head and neck.
- Doing this “dance” the western medical model wanted me to do to get money back from my insurance company.
- Couldn’t justify being on prescription medication, and going to a physical therapist only to continue to suffer with the waves of nausea and vomiting from the concussion.
It’s crazy to think all my issues were resolved in a 45-minute chiropractic appointment with a chiropractor in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. David DiPaolo
This was not the first time in my life, that I found help to keep my body healthy through various holistic means that the conventional medical model had no clue about.
There’s Got to Be a Better Way of Healing Knee Pain
I’ve always believed “there’s got to be a better way, a more natural way of doing things”
For example, when I first injured my left knee, I did everything I could to avoid going to the doctor believing my body could heal any damage I had done to my knee. 3 knee dislocations later, I found out I was terribly wrong and ACL surgery was now unavoidable.
As a matter of fact, there must be a balance between the two polar opposites: (Conventional Medical vs: Wholistic) Because the conventional medical model has some really great insights for the body to heal.
The process of taking back personal power in your healing process to begin collecting ALL information available from a number of different sources:
- Conventional Medical
- Chinese Medicine
This allows for the true path of healing to emerge…
Why Polar Opposites are Bad?
I see too many people stuck in unnecessary pain. They either believe the conventional medical model has ALL the answers…
They don’t believe the conventional medical model has any answers.
For example, my father believes absolutely everything his doctor tells him. As a result, he is now in the double digits as to how many surgeries he’s undergone in the past decade. This is not to mention the “pill organizer” he needs just to keep the number of prescription drugs he needs to take throughout the day.
On the other hand, I have many friends in the Asheville area who are violently opposed to doctors. They will go from practitioner to practitioner to try and find out what is wrong with their knee without ever going to a doctor to get a diagnosis. This is an example where a simple MRI is desperately needed to know how to develop a strategy to heal the knee.
It’s a sad state of affairs…
