Just call me “Admiral Bill”

It was 2005-ish and I was still seeing clients at my office in Louisville…

Mary showed up with her great niece (Donnet) to come see me…

Mary was in severe pain from a cortisone shot that hit a nerve in her hip going down her leg…

It took almost 30 minutes for Donnet to get Mary (89) out of the car and onto the table in my office…

Mary was born and raised in Kentucky (the South)

And

She is a very proper “Southern Woman”

Which meant, she was VERY POLITE and called me doctor…

The first appointment I let it slide because I just wanted to focus on getting her out of pain…

The second appointment I started mentioning it to her, that in fact, I was NOT a doctor even though,

We were getting her out of pain by creating “Pain-Pattern Interrupts” in her leg each time she showed up…

By the third appointment, I needed to “have a talk with Mary” which went something like this…

Me: “Mary you can’t call me doctor…”

Mary: “Ok, doctor!”

Me: “Mary, I said you can’t call me doctor…”

Mary: “Ok, doctor…”

Me: “Mary, we need to figure out another title for me so you won’t call me doctor.”

Mary: “Ok, doctor.”

Me: “How about you call me Admiral Bill?”

And that’s how Admiral Bill was born!

You see…

Getting out of knee pain is very much like this…

If you focus on the pain, you’ll just get more of it…

Kind of like telling you, “Don’t think about a PINK ELEPHANT!”

You just can’t do it…

Because your brain is powerful like that!

And every time you TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT A PINK ELEPHANT…

There it is…

Which is why so many people still have knee pain…

We have to replace PAIN with sometime else…
