Meniscus Tear Treatment, A Holistic Approach

Meniscus tear in the knee can heal itself depending on many factors like your level daily activity, age, time frame, etc. The faster you want to get back your life before the meniscus tear will determine which route is best for you to pursue.

While most people think that the answer to a meniscus tear treatment is surgery, a lot of the time arthroscopic surgery may not be necessary. Surprisingly enough, our bodies have the capability to repair torn cartilage if you have suffered an injury to the knee.

Meniscus Tear First Step

The first step in attempting to repair a meniscus tear is to provide your body with the proper nutrients it needs to reduce inflammation and mend the torn cartilage. Some foods, however, make the healing process much harder.

When you eat foods that are difficult for your body to digest, you stomach actually has an allergic reaction to the food, causing inflammation in your gut. These types of pro-inflammation foods, like foods that are high in Omega-6 fats like sunflower, peanut, and soybean oils should be avoided. Foods high in trans-fats, refined carbohydrates, and these Omega-6 fats are hard for your stomach to digest and can cause the gut inflammation that will slow down the healing process in your knee.

This type of inflammation is what your body works to fix first, putting the task of fixing the torn meniscus in your knee aside for later. When your body has inflammation, it uses naturally produced stem cells to reduce inflammation and heal the inflamed area. If you eat foods that you body does not have trouble digesting, those stem cells can work to fix the inflamed and torn cartilage in your knee.

There are also certain foods that help your body reduce inflammation. Fruits and vegetables, especially those high in antioxidants and good Omega-3 fats like avocados work to reduce inflammation in the body.

If you feed your body with the proper fuel it needs, it can begin to heal it’s own wounds, leaving not only your knee, but your entire body feeling healthier.

Hi Bill.
Going up and down the stairs a twitching pain, some pain for running, twitching pain if I walk 500 m. If I bent my leg I hear cracking sound. My leg is a little swollen I believe it’s the fluid. Sometimes I feel my knee is running away.

One day I’ll like to run 4km the way it. Hope my knee will be healed totally.

Good morning from Ontario. I have a torn meniscus in both knees, after marathon running !! For over 15 yrs now. I went to see an orthopedic surgeon about 5 yrs ago, who suggested if I can walk 5k leave well alone as he can’t guarantee I won’t need it repaired again in a few years. However, as you can imagine, it’s gradually getting worse, my walking is restricted, and, most nights, several times, I wake up with pretty excruciating ( at least 4 me), finding it difficult to turn over in the bed. I have to lift both knees.… Read more »

The doctor has not done an MRI at this point. The Physical therapist seems to think that there is a small tear in my meniscus causing a slight bump of swelling when I am on it working or utilizing my knees for a period of time. He said surgery to repair is unlikely and going in to remove some of the meniscus Is possible if swelling and pain continue..Is it possible to go back to work hiking 2-4 miles a day or does this end my career..I received this injury playing basketball in Jan.

I HAVE THREE TEARS IN MY left knee meniscus and they have been there for a year. My doc suggested physiotherapy but not had the appointment yet ! I use the gym and my trainer is trying to build the muscle above and below the knee with me, but I am still in pain when I walk, especially down stairs and when I wake up. What advise have you. Oh apparently two of the tears are from old age and were only discovered when the third one happened and I had an MRI which showed them up! Many thanks.

Hi Sir, I’m 22. I injured my left knee while playing cricket. I thought it’ll heal by itself and just ignored the little pain it was causing. I even played cricket again. During this period (five months), the pain increased a little. So, I thought it would be wise to consult a doctor. After an X-ray, which revealed nothing, I had an MRI&CT which showed there is a horizontal tear in the lateral meniscus. And now, the doctor suggests I have to undergo a surgery, which I’m really really afraid of the overall outcome. Will it heal by itself and… Read more »

Ok. I have what my ortho doc thinks is a tear in my meniscus on the inside of my leg. It happened suddenly last week. I have been doing RiCE except for the C as I had no bandage. Because of the lack of insurance and my problems with NSAIDS ect. It is difficult to get the inflammation down. I already eat a Paleo diet. I use blue-emu cream. I am looking for a holistic approach to pain reduction in the knee and hopefully returning to normal life of a backpacker.
Thanks Penny

I have slight pain in my knee when sitting cross legged like its twisted…twisted my knee a few months back but the pain went away no problem super fast too, now this seemingly out of nowhere, want to avoid further injury and heal this so I can enjoy more yoga poses again and simply sitting how I choose. Also when bent if I press …gently if course , right under the knee cap then I also feel the twisted sensation like when I am cross legged. What do you think?
